Yaz Yasmin Birth Control Pill

Yaz, Yasmin, and Ocella Birth Control Pill Dangers

Yasmin birth control pills were originally developed by Berlex Laboratories and were first approved for use in 2001.  In 2006, Bayer acquired Berlex and began marketing a slightly different version of Yasmin called Yaz.  Ocella is the generic name for Yaz.  All three birth control pills contain estrogen and progestin.  The estrogen is ethinyl estradiol and the progestin is dropsirenone or drsp.  Yasmin and Yaz are the first birth control to use the progestin drsp.

Bayer Puts Profits over Public Safety

The manufacturers of Yasmin, Yaz and Ocella promise that this new birth control is the "pill that goes beyond the rest."  The direct-to-consumer advertisements also promise additional benefits beyond unwanted pregnancies.  The advertisements claim that Yaz and Yasmin are as safe as other types of birth control pills.  Bayer's slick marketing campaign made Yaz/Yasmin the best-selling oral contraception pill in the United States in 2009.

The ads' focus on the benefits of Yaz without properly disclosing the risks of the pills has brought repeated warnings from the FDA.  Even worse, the marketing has misled millions of women and their prescribing physicians about the safety of Yaz and Yasmin.  Bayer has repeatedly minimized the serious health risks of Yaz and Yasmin including heart attacks, blood clots, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, strokes and even death.

In 2008 as part of a settlement with the FDA and 27 states, Bayer agreed to spend at least $20 million on an ad campaign to correct the deceptive ads it had been running.  The new ads will warn that Yaz is not FDA approved to cure pimples or PMS.  Many believe however that the new ads still do not adequately warn of the dangers of Yaz due to the progestin, drospirenone.
