Ortho Evra Warning Label Changed Three Times Due to Birth Control Patch Dangers

November 2005 - The FDA required the warning label of the Ortho Evra birth control patch be changed to alert consumers that using the patch exposes them to approximately 60 percent more estrogen than most birth control pills. 

September 2006 – The Ortho Evra birth control patch warning label was again changed to alert women of a nearly two-fold increase in the risk of blood clots with the use of the Ortho Evra birth control patch.

January 2008 – The FDA required additional changes to the warning label of the Ortho Evra birth control patch.  This time the additional warnings included the results of a study that found that users of the Ortho Evra birth control patch were at a higher risk of developing serious blood clots or venous thromboembolism then women using birth control pills.  Venous thromboembolism can lead to a pulmonary embolism—a life-threatening condition.
