Zinc in Denture Creams poses Serious Health Threat

More than 35 million Americans wear dentures and until now they had no idea that denture creams can be dangerous, but a recent report in the medical journal "Neurology" connects denture creams, specifically the high-level of zinc contained in the products, to serious neurological damage.  The zinc in the denture creams is absorbed through the gums causing toxic levels of zinc to enter the body.  The high level of zinc in the body causes a depletion of copper.  This combination can cause neurological disorders.

Used as recommended, a tube of denture cream should last from three to ten weeks.  However, research has shown that most patients use at least two tubes weekly.  Patients sometimes use excessive amounts of denture cream to compensate for ill-fitting dentures.  This increased usage exposes patients to at least 330 mg of zinc a day, significantly more than the recommended daily allowance of 8 mg for women and 11 mg for men.

Neuropathy is a disorder caused by damaged nerves and can leave victims permanently disabled and reliant upon a walker or wheelchair.  Symptoms of neuropathy may include:
