Calaxo Screws Recalled
Serious complications lead to Calaxo
Screw recall
In November 2007, the Calaxo Screw was recalled by the FDA.
The Calaxo screws were recalled due to serious injuries to patients who had the
device implanted during surgery to repair damage to the anterior cruciate
ligament (ACL). The Calaxo Screws subject to the recall have a tendency to
break inside the body, leady to a variety of serious injuries. All numbers
and lots of the Calaxo Screws were subject to the November 2007 recall.
Signs and Symptoms of Injury from
Calaxo Screw
Patients suffering injury from Calaxo Screws report painful
swelling in the knee, infection, fluid build-up, and other serious side effects.
Many patients with a defective Calaxo Screw required additional surgeries to
remove the screw along with dead or infected tissue and bone. Sometimes
the Calaxo Screw is replaced with another medical device to improve the
patient's condition.
Calaxo Screws used in Reconstructive Knee Surgeries
Calaxo Screws were used in ACL Reconstructive knee surgeries.
The Calaxo Screw was used to hold the ligament graft in place. Patients
who have undergone ACL surgery may have a Calaxo Screw implanted in their body
and may not even know it. Calaxo Screws are different from most surgical
screws in that they are designed to be naturally absorbed into the body within a
year.
