Heart Side Effects
The FDA has added a "black box" warning for heart attack and congestive heart
failure risk for Avandia. In May 2007, a study in the New England Journal
of Medicine indicated that Avandia could increase the risk of a heart attack by
43% and the risk of cardiovascular death by as much as 64%. Experts have
suggested that as many as 100,000 heart attacks could have been caused by
Avandia.
Other Side Effects
Avandia may increase bone resorption and decrease bone formation, potentially
leading to weak and brittle bones that may be prone to fractures and breaks.
These side effects have been linked to increased risk of osteoporosis and broken
bones.
In 2006, Health Canada warned that Avandia could lead to new cases or
worsening of a vision problem known as macular edema. Macular edema causes
inflammation of the retina from an accumulation of fluid behind the eye
resulting in blurred vision, decreased color sensitvity and poorer adaptation to
darkness.
In July 2009 new reports linking Avandia to liver failure
prompted watchdog group Public Citizen to renew its call for a recall of the
drug. According to a report in Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety,
11 adverse event reports were received by the FDA linking Avandia to death from
liver toxicity.
