Enbrel Side Effects

Enbrel, marketed by Amgen and Wyeth, has been linked to serious side effects including tuberculosis and fungal infections. Tuberculosis

The FDA has added a "black box" warning for tuberculosis risk for Enbrel. An increased incidence of tuberculosis ("TB") was found in postmarketing studies for Enbrel. The warning states that TB in patients using Enbrel may be due to reactivation of latent TB infection or to new infection. Patients using Enbrel should be tested for latent TB prior to taking Enbrel and should be carefully monitored during the course of treatment for signs of TB infection.

Potentially deadly fungal infections

In September 2008, the FDA ordered stronger warnings about the risk of potentially deadly fungal infections, especially histoplasmosis, in people taking Enbrel. Histoplasmosis is a fungal infection that starts as a respiratory infection and spread throughout the body. The FDA has warned patients and doctors to watch for signs and symptoms of fungal infections, including persistent fever, cough, shortness of breath or fatigue.
